Ipswich River Nutrient Dynamics: Preliminary Assessment of a Simple Nitrogen-Processing Model.

چکیده
‘Ihe Ipswich River is a low-gradient, coastal river in northeastem Massachusetts. It is about 55 km long and drains an area of 401 km’. Previous observations and studies indicate high levels of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) in the headwaters of the river due to urban and residential land use (1). However, concentrations drop quickly with distance downstream, presumably due to biological processing of the nitrogen. A mass balance budget of nitrogen indicates a large unknown nitrogen sink in the Ipswich River (1). To further investigate the dynamics of N cycling in the

Water Quality Modeling and Evaluation of Nutrient Control Strategies Using QUAL2K in the Small Rivers
Background: Qual2k is a stream water quality model and was used to evaluate the water quality of the Kine-Vars River and assess the response of the river to nutrient management strategies. Methods: For that purpose, 7 sample stations were selected and surface water samples were collected in the winter and summer of 2012 and were analyzed for temperature, dissolved oxygen, biological oxygen dem...
متن کاملPrediction of Nitrogen Injection Performance in Conventional Reservoirs Using the Correlation Developed by the Incorporation of Experimental Design Techniques and Reservoir Simulation
Enhanced oil recovery using nitrogen injection is a commonly applied method for pressure maintenance in conventional reservoirs. Numerical simulations can be practiced for the prediction of a reservoir performance in the course of injection process; however, a detailed simulation might take up enormous computer processing time. In such cases, a simple statistical model may be a good approach to...
متن کاملPredicting the response of Gulf of Mexico hypoxia to variations in Mississippi River nitrogen load
The effects of nutrient loading from the Mississippi River basin on the areal extent of hypoxia in the northern Gulf of Mexico were examined using a novel application of a dissolved oxygen model for a river. The model, driven by river nitrogen load and a simple parameterization of ocean dynamics, reproduced 17 yr of observed hypoxia location and extent, subpycnocline oxygen consumption, and cro...
متن کاملIntegrated modelling of eutrophication and organic contaminant fate in rivers
Eutrophication and contamination by toxic organic pollutants are the major problems in water quality management. Despite the fact that both problems have been subjected to extensive research and modelling, they have traditionally been treated separately. Because the models used are single-issue models, many interactions between nutrient cycles and organic contaminant fate and effect are missed....
